They have succeeded in finding one that very efficient; nuclear fuel. however, the ores which produced this in of energy, e.g. uranium ores, will eventually run out, too. Fortunately a source of abundant energy, which is virtually inexhaustible-sunlight-has been waiting for the scientist.

It is estimated that the energy which falls no one square matre of the earth's surface per second can be used to keep about 100 watt lamp burning. The sun's energy is really abundant, but only a limited amount has so far been used by a man. The sun can also used as a source of fuel for power plants. Such power plants are still in the experimental stages.
However, its hoped that they will lead the way to wider use of solar energy to run machines.
Solar energy can be used in telephone communications, space technology, and farming. Solar battries have been in experimental use for a number of years to power telephone lines. They are now being used to recharge battries which power instruments used in space vehichles.  Scientist have also succeeds in catching even a small parts of the energy, no body would worry about running out of fossil fuels or uranium ores.

                    NOISE
Noise can be defined as sound that we do not want. This definition is a subjective one, however, because what is unwanted sound to other. Noise is subjective.
That noise is subjective may mean that people receive it at different levels. This two people will not agree that the loud music from  a neighbours house, for example, is noise. To one of them , however, it is tolerable, noisewhile to the others it is anoying noise. This different in the levels of reception between two people may be due to the fact the former is a patien person, whille the letter is not.
To borrow a term from psychology, the person who can tolerate the loud  music is said to have been conditioned, whill the person who is annoyed by it is said not to have been conditioned by the noise.
In additio to the tolerance and annoyance levels, three is yet another level of noise reception. This is what might be called the demage level, where the noise is such that it demage the eardrum. The demage may be temporary, and in this case the person concerned may be only temporarily deafened. It may be also be that the damage is permanent. When this occurs the person become permanentely deaf.
Very often however, deafness does not occur right way but comes gradually as result of  along periode of exposure to the source of  loud noise. The person concerned may tolerate that noise because he was been conditioned by it, but demage is done. The damaging noise will accelerate his gradual loss of hearing due to growing age.

Two very important fuel gases are made from petroleum during the refining process. They are butane and propane, which are similar to methane. These gases are sold in small tanks and are used for cigarette lighters, portable melding torches, and camping stoves.
Mixture of the two gases are stored under pressured as a liquid. For this reason the mixture is called liquefied petroleum gas or LPG. As it is used the liquid in the tank evaporates and leaved the tank as gas. The main use of LPG is as a cooking fuel on farms and in small towns are where a central gas making plant would not be practical. Instead of piping the gas to the house where it is to be used, a tank of LPG is connected directly to the stove. Because LPG is sold in tanks, it is often called tank gas or bottled gas.

Electrical energy is derived from the sun indirectly e.g. it can be derived from the power of water falling down a mountain side. water falls on the earth surface in the form the rain, which is known to be formed by the evaporation of water caused by the heat of the sun. this water vapour rises, consensed on cooling, and falls as rain.
the light and heat energy from coal is also derived indirectly from the sun. coal was formed by the pressure of the rock. " on vegetation grew with aid of sunlight, from which carbohydrates were formed, thus converting solar energy into chemical energy is released.
Energy used to drive car engines is derived from petrol, which was also formed with the indirect aid of the sun. plants, and animals were pressed under the rock in the earth. these dead animal and vegetable remains formed petroleum, from whic petrol and oil are now obtained.
Thus the sun can be said to be the source of nearly all energy, and that in the absence of the sun's heat and light, no life could exist on earth.

HENRY FOR AND MASS PRODUCTION
Many of you may have seen a ford car. Some of you may own one, or at least you might have owned. One formerly Ford cars were popular in Indonesia, although today there are more Toyota and other Japanese cars than Fords or other American cars.
Like Toyota car, the Ford car is named after the man who started the car factory. Henry Ford, along with his friends started the Ford  Motor Company in 1903. it was a small company then, but buy 1927 it had grown into a giant company.
The great success of the company began during the years 1912 and 1913, when it applied all the elements of “mass production”. The most modern machine tools were used. The parts of the car were standardized. Machines and workers were placed in orderly sequence. Moving conveyor belts used. Other devices were employed in  order that the movement of parts and materials  might be economical and efficient. All activities were planned and coordinated.
Basically, that is what mass production is all about. The word “mass” means a larger number. The terms “mass production” refers to methods of organizing production processes for a maximum number of products at the lowest cost. It is based on two general principles. The other is the use of tools and machines in the production of standard, interchangeable parts.
From the Ford Motor Company mass production spread to other companies. Henry Ford Motor company becoming known as its creator. Was this creator of modern mass production a graduate of a famous university? No, he was not. He never studied at any university. He left school when he was 15 years and began  to work. You might think that he ought to have finished his schooling first. Young Henry did not think so. Perhaps instead he thought that one could be successful without finishing his schooling.
Young Henry Ford might have promised himself that he would be a successful man, and his name will be remembered in the history of mass production for good.

Henry Ford became the creator of the modern mass production even though he did not study in university. This information can be found in paragraph……….

When we buy canned or bottled food products at the grocer’s or the supermarket, we will find out that there are some additives added to the main nutrients. An additives is a non-nutritive substance intentionally added to food generally in small quantities, to improve appearance, flavor, storage properties, etc.
Most governments issue lists of permitted additives stating the highest acceptable concentration, defining food products in which they may be used and sometimes recommending the maximum daily consumption. Such legislation is revised periodically, and product may be added to or deleted from permitted lists because of additional scientific knowledge and experience of their use.
A group of food additives includes vitamins, amino acids, and minerals which are added to foodstuffs to compensate for losses occurring during processing or to provide additional sources in diet that might otherwise be deficient in such nutrients. Examples of their use include enrichment o margarine with the addition of vitamin A, and niacin amide to flour or bread. Salt often has a small amount of iodine to it to avoid a diet deficiency that can cause goiter development.
Appearance is an important factor in food appeal, and legislation in most countries permits the addition of both natural and synthetic colouring mater based on the colouring standards issued by the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and World Health Organization (WHO).
Flavoring materials are  added to basic foodstuff to provide a characteristic product flavor or to supplement or modify the original flavor. Most flavoring materials are still of natural origin, but progress in organic chemistry has made, it possible to analyze flavoring materials and to synthesize product similar with those found in nature.
Flavor can also be influenced by the addition of the flavor enhancer such as monosodium glutamate which intensifies perception of flavoring.

                  THE CITY OF LONDON
The history of london cannot be separated from the river thames. If you look at the map you will see that it is the gateway to London from the European  continent. In the first century, when the Ramans  occupied England, there was a small village on Lud Hill along the Thames, where the river was at its lowest point. It was about ten miles from the sea. The Romans discovered that they could load and unload their merchant ship here. So, they  build a city on Lud Hill.

A great fire in 1665 brought a big change to London. The great will surrounding  the city was destroyed and today we can only see its ruins. Another change was brought by the Second World War.
LPG is also used to small extent to run automobiles and tractors. When the fuel tank is empty, it is replaced by a full one.

If you look at  the front of a large, modern hospital, you may notice that there are two separate entrances. One of these is for patient in need of immediate treatment it is the emergency entrance. Here ambulances are to be seen pulling up at any hour of the day or night. The other entrance is the main entrance of the hospital.
On the ground floor inside the main entrance there are probably a reception area and writing room, and also an office. On the floors above and below are the numerous other department. On a lower floor may be the laundry and the kitchen. On another floor will be a maternity section for mothers and their babies. On other floors are the operating rooms, called operating theatres, and special department such as the radiography department, where x-rays are taken and developed.
In laboratories, special test are carried out on body tissues and fluids to find out the nature of patient’s disease. The pharmacy  supplies the drug to treat patients. Near to the operating theatres is blood bank to store blood  for transfusions. Here too is the sterilizing department, where all the operating instruments and bandages used in the operating theatres and the ward are cleaned and made free from germs.
A very large staff is needed to run a hospital efficiently. It consist of people who work together in teams. The hospital administrators organize the day working of the hospital. The medical staff including the doctors and nurses, work directly with the patient. So too do such people as the physiotherapists , anaesthetists , and radiographers. Oil like coal and natural gas, is a fossil fuel. Fossil fuels made from the remains of dead plants and animals. It is thought that oil comes from tiny plants and animals whose bodies fell in their millions to the seabed when they died. There they were covered by sand and mud, which later hardened into rocks. In the course of millions of years, the plants and animal material underwent chemical changes and eventually turned into oil.
Oil deposit lie hidden deep beneath th surface of the earth. They have to be searched for. Unles the oil actually somes to the surface, it is impossible to be certain that any is present.
The rising demand for oil products keeps the oil companies busy exploring new oil fields, and drilling new wells. Exploration teams are sent to distant regions to search for oil. If the exploration shows good results, the company decides to drill a well. Thus the exploration phase ends, and production pahse begins.
Crude oil has to be transported to refinery to be made into the many products that are useful to man, such as petrol, krosene, diesel oil, lubricants, asphalt. Furtehr processing gives aviation fuel, greases, fertilizers, insecticides, man-made fibres and many other things.
The oil industry has a very complex and widespread ditribution system. Ocean takers, pipelines, rail tankers, and road takers are used to bring the oil products to seaport, inland depots, can and drum factories, and to tens of thousands of petrol stations in cities and along motorways.
More than any other, oil industry influences the lives of men and women everywhere. From the largest to the simplest home, whose need may only be kerosens  for its lammps and stoves, there is daily need for large quantities of the various products
